I am not convinced that our 5 feet of snow is going to melt soon. I keep hearing about rain coming, and then it ends up as snow or it goes out to sea south of us. I think the sun is warm enough to start thawing the soil, but we've got this giant blanket of snow in the way.
Soooo, I'm going to try shoveling the snow off of one of my garden beds. Just an experiment, I'll see if the soil in a shoveled bed gets workable sooner than unshoveled beds.
And, it'll be fun to be out in the garden, (maybe).

I've been considering doing the same thing! Whilst we have about 2 feet of snow here, the wind blew great snow drifts over my raised beds. By the look of it, I won't be planting any peas in March. I was thinking about putting some black plastic over the cleared bed to see if that helps with defrosting the soil.
Having the seedlings growing in the basement has helped with the winter blues, there is nothing like getting out in the garden in the Spring to lift the spirits. Deb S.
Good luck with your shoveling. Unfortunately we had a slight thaw followed by some frigid temps so our snow has a nice layer of ice over it now. But we are due to go up to 6C (42F) next week - and I couldn't be more looking forward to it!
This is very inspirational that you made the best of your situation. Shoveling snow of one bed sounds brilliant.
I did get it shoveled. Below was solid frozen soil - of course. And nice green rye grass.
And not maybe fun, it was a lot of fun to be out "gardening" again.
I wondered about doing this as well but I can't figure out how to actually get to my raised beds yet. I need some melting to happen first. In the meantime I'll admire my teeny tiny broccoli seedlings.
I've been thinking about shoveling off at least one bed too so I can get some spring greens transplanted sooner. It is unusual for us to have so much snow covering the beds in March, but this is how we handled it back in 2011: http://growagoodlife.com/the-snow-is-not-melting-fast-enough/
It worked! The raised beds drained and warmed up much quicker than the rest of the garden.
Kudos for getting out there! I'm going to let the sun do that part of the job here :)
