This is a journal of my vegetable gardens. Skippy was my first dog and he thought the garden was his, even though I did all the work. But Skippy always stood by me and was a great friend. Now Suzie and Charley follow in his footsteps and garden with me. We're located near Boston (USDA zone 6A). I have a community plot, a backyard vegetable garden, fruit trees and berry bushes, chickens and bees. I use sustainable organic methods and do my best to grow all of my family's vegetables myself.

sprouting fall seedlings and evading the chipmunk

My little fall greens seedlings are sprouting. No thanks to the chipmunk that dug up several of the pots. Maybe he didn't find much, maybe I had planted twice what I needed, as it seems I am getting a lot of sprouts anyway. Lettuce, escarole, arugula, bok choy. They will fill in the spaces left by spent spring vegetables. I moved the seedling tray to a safer location that chipmunks can't get to.

We had a bumper crop of chipmunks one year in Belmont who dug out many small plants from our containers. The hint I was given by the owner of Pemberton Gardens in Cambridge, Mark Saidnawey, was to sprinkle dried blood on the top of the containers. That did it. Thankfully, no more digging.

That's a great hint. I'll give that a try. Is it Blood Meal, like the Espoma product, that you use? That will give the plants some nitrogen too. I love going to Pemberton Gardens.

Ours was Dried Blood, but that was awhile ago and I see that Espoma now only has the Blood Meal. However, when I googled dried blood, some of the Espoma Dried Blood came up, maybe leftover. So, I am assuming that the Blood Meal is the thing to try now.
